Online Safety Newsletter
Welcome to 'Wake Up Wednesday', your go-to place for online safety tips and support. We'll frequently share helpful information here to support you and your child in navigating the digital world.
We know children often use different websites and apps than their parents or carers, and it can feel overwhelming to keep up with what's new. But here's the good news: keeping children safe online isn't that different from keeping them safe offline. Many of the same principles apply.
What you can do
The best way to keep your child safe online is to talk with them regularly and help them think critically about what they see. Here are some ways to start:
- Ask questions "What did you see online today?", "Who are you chatting to?", "What's your favourite app at the moment?"
- Encourage healthy scepticism Help them question whether people online are who they say they are, and whether information they see is trustworthy
- Talk about the tricky stuff Discuss fake news, scams, and fake followers in an age-appropriate way
- Share your own experiences Talk about good and unhealthy relationships, both online and offline
- Explore together Ask your child to show you their favourite game or app, and look at privacy settings together
