English Vision

Writing

We follow a Mastery approach to English through the programme ‘Pathways to Write.’ Units of work are delivered using high quality texts and children in all year groups are given varied opportunities for writing. Skills are built up through repetition within the units, and children apply these skills in the writing activities provided.  Many opportunities for widening children’s vocabulary are given through the Pathways to Write approach and this builds on the extensive work we do in school to provide our children with a rich and varied vocabulary.  Children will be producing different outcomes through the term and create a final outcome using all their mastery skills which will be used by class teachers to assess progress through the academic year. Every term will begin with a week's unit of poetry where children will learn a poem and understand the key features of poetry. Children will develop their speaking and listening skills along with improving confidence and develop an appreciation for poetry.

Speaking and Listening

Children at Central Park are provided with an abundance of opportunities to strengthen their ability
to communicate effectively, with each other, and with adults. Cooperative and collaborative learning
opportunities are integral to our lesson structure and we believe that talking is essential stage in the
development of learning with strong links to the power of talk improving language achievement.

Spelling

At Central Park we use Oxford Owl Read Write Inc. spelling programme. Using a proven approach underpinned by phonics, fast–paced lessons and an online subscription, Read Write Inc. Spelling ensures spelling success for children who are fluent readers. From years 2 - 6 children will use weekly units to learn new spelling rules. Children in Year 1 and EYFS will be learning to spell through phonic lessons and common exception words. Children will be sent home words every week to learn and will be tested on these every Friday. Their results will be recorded on a racker to access progress.

Handwriting

To support and teach handwriting, we use the Nelson Handwriting scheme. This is a whole-school programme designed to help all children develop a confident, legible and personal handwriting style and meet higher curriculum expectations. The programme includes resources for pattern practice and motor skills, fun activities to bring handwriting to life and an online subscription to help implement the programme in class. Children from year 2 onwards will be taught how to join letters and begin to write fluently. Children practise handwriting daily to help implement new learning.
